National Day of Mourning

Cockington Green - September 19, 2022

Out of respect for the end of a remarkable 70 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II upon her passing on 8th September 2002, the Australian Government declared Thursday, 22nd September 2022 to be a National Day of Mourning and National public holiday.

Cockington Green Gardens was originally opened as a display of Buildings and Gardens of Great Britain in 1979. With these deep ties to the United Kingdom, we are committed to honouring the late Queen Elizabeth II by holding a brief event to commemorate her wonderful life and dedicated contribution to the Commonwealth and more broadly, the world. We would invite visitors to gather at the Rose Room outdoor garden and pond area to participate in this brief commemoration ceremony.

The commemorative event is designed to be simple and brief and is planned as follows:

  • 10.45am: – Piper commences playing in the outdoor garden area near the Rose Room
  • 10.56am: – MC makes opening welcoming remarks
  • 11.00am: – All visitors asked to observe one minute’s silence
  • 11.01am: – British National Anthem played
  • 11.02am: – Visitors thanked and Piper recommences playing
  • 11.07am: – Piper finishes

Whilst there is no requirement for any visitor to join the gathering, we would ask that visitors on the day, wherever they may be in the display, to stop and join the rest of the Nation in observing a minute’s silence.
