Since being forced to close our doors on March 23 to help stop the spread of Coronavirus COVID19, our focus has been solely on reopening. At the time of writing, no firm date for reopening is known except it is clearly getting closer as lockdown restrictions are beginning to ease.
The safety of visitors and staff will be of paramount importance once reopening occurs and as such we are concentrating on presentation of the venue in a safe and clean environment as well as planning for appropriate social distancing requirements to help keep everyone safe.
Whilst a decision has unfortunately been taken to postpone this year’s Floriade as Canberra has traditionally been used to, Cockington Green Gardens management has been able to negotiate with Floriade organizers for the installation of more than 15,000 bulbs in our gardens. These bulbs would have formed part of the Commonwealth Park display but instead will they be spread around the city to venues such as Cockington Green Gardens. This is a great initiative by the organizers and ensures the city will still be in full Spring colour come September and October.
Our “Floriade” garden beds will be located at the western edge of the attraction bordering Federation Square where we have removed our trees ahead of future replanting and new display areas. Our garden staff have been busy creating new garden beds for the display with bulb planting about to get underway.
We will continue to use the What’s On section of our website to update on progress regarding reopening and other new display developments. Our thoughts are with everyone to make sure you all stay safe and we look forward to welcoming visitors back here very soon.
